Gift quality first printing 1897 hardcover in illustrated cloth covered boards with sharp tips and lightly brushed spine ends. No names, tears or soil. Hinge papers are fine. Cloth is blue, slate grey and off white with circular medallion images of dutch boys, windmills, countryside landscapes, mom carrying in the milk, a boy fishing on a lake. There is a large paper label on the frt cover with a red and black lettered title. Lightly sunned spine cloth shows a small paper spine label with a micro chip and light abrasion from storage, but full title and author's last name and lion rampant is clearly visible. Book now housed in protective, removable, crystal clear archival mylar jacket. 199 pages are crisp and tight with an additional 15 pages of adverts in the rear. Book has been little handled and is a more than presentable copy of this uncommon edition. Over fifty million copies sold, Black Beauty is one of the best-selling books of all time. While forthrightly teaching animal welfare, it also teaches how to treat people with kindness, sympathy, and respect. In 2003, Black Beauty was listed at number 58 on the BBC's survey The Big Read.
