First edition, first printing, tidy exlib hardcover in illustrated 'Titan' buckram library binding showing a color drawing of Dragon rearing with his mane flowing on cover of book and matching price-clipped dj. Front end paper neatly excised, glue dots on pastedowns hidden by dj flaps. No library stamps on edges of 96 page block, occasional light finger soil in margins with no text obscured. Call tag on backstrip of book, and amazingly, the librarian couldn't have been lazier than to cut a hole in the dust wrapper backstrip to show the aforementioned call tag written on book. There is a yellow strip of blank tape that had the library name on it, took the outer layer off w/the letters, but the base of this sticker remains. Jacket now protected in new mylar with hole clipped so as not to view a white paper circle behind this clipped hole. True story! For the third time in his life, Dragon was traveling north and east, toward a new life. Eight years ago the first of these journeys had taken the small but rugged mustang from his home in the Mexican mountains to a life of restricted freedom and uneasy safety on a Texas breeding ranch. The second journey, three years later, had led to a period of challenge and achievement for the little freckled stallion. Under the loving hand of young Lyle Hunter, Dragon was broken to ride and was taught the demanding art of Western performance competition. At around fifteen, an age when most horses are considered old, Dragon was named an International Performance Champion at the Third Annual International Pony of the Americas show. Dragon Defiant brings to a close the true life story of this remarkable horse. Lyle Hunter has grown into a college student with little time for horses, and so the painful decision is made to sell Dragon. His new home is in Michigan with Wilda Ware, a crusty, rugged middle-aged woman who has long yearned to have Dragon as a stud for her small breeding farm. There Dragon continues to sire the colts that have brought him distinction as one of the foundation sires of the Pony of the Americas breed. And to the end he remains true to the qualities of courage, stamina, and intelligence that made him a leader in the wild.
