Book Condition: Near Fine

Gift quality hardcover in near mint shape, in original beige paper dust wrapper. Will James' fourth novel. This is an early Scribner's reprint. The actual first edition of this title was published in one single first-edition state and had 1931 at title foot of title page, and Scribner's A on copyright page. There are 51 b&w drawings in Big-Enough plus a photo frontispiece of Will James and his own little horse that he had named Big-Enough. The actual first is the only copy that has the photo, all other books include just line illustrations. In 1932, 'Big-Enough' was republished as the fifth volume of the five-volume Drifting Cowboy Series produced in three states in 1932. I am not certain of the differences in the three states. That is this book offered here which is in fine condition with sharp tips and spine ends, bound in rich pine green pebbled cloth with a gold horse's head embossed on the center of the front board, plus impressions of ruled edges and decorative corner accents but they are not gold, just ruled line impressions. The spine title letters are gold and are in a coral red title box at upper 1/4 of spine with five flat (not raised) gold filigree style spine spacer embellishments. The endpapers show faint age-toning, but no names tears or soil within the 314 pp text, just some dust at head and a couple of light marks at foot of page block. Fore-edge of page block is untrimmed. Super rare, unclipped (and unpriced) original dust jacket made from thin beige paper has a black line drawing of a man leading his horse on foot across a narrow, rocky mountain path while he carries his rifle in his right hand. Small 1/2 x 1/2" chip at frt board upper tip, miniscule loss at two other tips and foot of spine, one closed tear with a smidge of loss over the word Series at head of dj front panel, lastly, a triangular chip where frt panel fold meets head of spine. Sounds worse than it looks, see image or ask for one if none is shown here. Jacket now in new mylar and displays beautifully. This is a story of a rancher's young boy and a young colt, who could have each other when they were 'big enough'.
