Rear gutter paper had split and shows a 1/8" hole 3/8" down from head, backstrip now repaired but small hole remains. Book fitted with a removable clear polyester jacket. 381 pp plus three pages of other T. Nelson & Sons offerings in rear. The paper is very thin, but is not browned or brittle. Front board darkened in some areas from use or perhaps a grease spot? Daughters of land-owning Protestant families in the South West of Ireland in the mid-nineteenth century, the cousins Edith Oenone Somerville (1858-1949) and her cousin Violet Martin (Martin Ross) (1862-1915), wrote novels and short stories which displayed wonderful skills of observation and humor in detailing the social and political conditions in Ireland during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including the Irish R.M. tales, the novel The Real Charlotte, and many more. The Real Charlotte -- The authors' fifth collaborative novel set in County Cork, is generally thought of as their masterpiece and its tone is completely different from the humorous shenanigans of Major Yeates, Flurry Knox et al. Even after Ross's death, Somerville continued to credit her in publications, claiming they continued their collaboration via spiritual communication and automatic writing. Somerville was a devoted sportswoman and became master of the West Carbery Foxhounds in 1903. Somerville was also active in the suffragist movement.
