Book Condition: Very Good

First edition, first printing softcover in colorfully illustrated card covers with clear cello tape diagonally over the 4 cover tips. This is a barely used former library book without any call numbers or writing on the spine of the book or covers. Two whited out library names on front endpapers and one on inside rear cover. Plus there is one library stamp with a small marker X over it, (not whited out), on the head only, of the page block. Fore-edge and foot of page block unmarked. Faint sticker pull on head of half title page from removed (empty) library borrowing date stamps. 413 pp text is crisp, white and unmarked throughout. This work consolidates information about the history and tradition of polo that was previously contained in thousands of diverse sources. It provides an important reference tool for students and fans of the game and helps to preserve the sport's history while making it much more accessible. In true encyclopedia style, there are more than 10,000 entries ranging from Abbot to Zwartberg, providing information about artists, authors and their writings, breeders, clubs, history, personalities, players, ponies, tournaments, an explanation of the rules of the game and a myriad of other topics. The book contains several tables and more than 100 illustrations, including drawings, photographs, paintings and portraits. Stephen A. Orthwein, chairman of the Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame and a past-chairman of the United States Polo Association, contributes a substantial foreword.
