First edition hardcover in iillustrated paper covered boards with red background and head portrait in color of Black Beauty on frt and rear boards. Color loss and bumping at extremities, 1/4" split at head of frt gutter and a few surface indentations from storage. Not exlib, no names, tears or soil found but a scrape mark seen across the foot of boards and page block. The un-paginated 154 pp text is browned but not brittle. Only previous ownership mark is a vintage Santa Claus sticker surrounded by 4 gold stars on the fep. Darling and uncommon 'pocket sized' chunky book measuring 5 3/8" tall x 4 11/16" wide x 3/4" thick. Book has #1057 imprinted on the backstrip (as published). Story was not published as a children's book but as a wake-up call for adults of the 19th century as to how poorly they were treating their animals in general, and horses in particular. Told in 'first' horse 'person'.
