First John C. Winston printing 1927. A straight and solid hardcover in black cloth covered boards with embossed spine title that has no gilt remaining. Tips and spine ends bumped and rubbed with a few short splits in the cloth at spine ends, the largest being 5/8' at head of backstrip. Front board has a large paste-on color art plate surrounded by a ruled gilt line that has only 20% of the gilt remaining. This image is stunning without chips or surface wear/color loss. Scene is of a lovely redhead woman wearing a long green riding jacket, crisp white shirt, red mens necktie, white string gloves and bowler complete with her stag horn end riding crop under her arm. She is standing at Black Beauty's head, holding the reins of his double bridle checking tack before the hunt begins in front of a bustling barn scene. Top edge of page block is dyed red, front end paper neatly excised, book opens to the title page. Introduction by Alma B. Caldwell and 13 black and white illustrations plus a colored fronts piece by Edwin John Prittie within the 297 crisp pages that show an occasional fingerprint in the margin. The rare dust jacket is a professional reproduction that shows small chips at tips, color loss at spine ends and rear panel but displays well from the front and backstrip. Jacket now in new mylar. The story is told in first 'horse' person and was not written as a children's story but rather an effort to bring to the attention of the adults of the 1800s the cruel treatment she saw in the streets and avenues of England every day. Because of this awakening, the humane society was created.
