Solid red rear board is clean. The three little horses about whom this story is written were Piet's neighbors who played all day in a meadow near his house, and it was through watching them and learning to know and love them that the idea came to him for this endearing tale. This book picks up where it's predecessor left off. The three little mares are now living in the palace with the young princesses and are enjoying the special care they receive from palace staff including wearing their own little gold crowns, wearing pajamas to their own, individual twin beds *inside* the castle, being spoon fed and so on. They played and romped in the Castle meadows all day. They even join their young owners when a governess arrives to teach the girls their school lessons. Some other palace animals make fun of the horses because they aren't acting like real horses at all anymore, in their PJ's and such..... This troubled the horses who said real horses are what they are, so real horses they shall be. With that, the three crawl out of their bedroom window one night and ran and ran and ran away to where, they did not know. They finally end up at a traveling carnival and take over the job of replacing the carnival master's old horse who had passed, and become harnessed up to help. Blackie was the 1st to volunteer. They would take turns pulling the ride to the delight of everyone in town.
