This is the true story of a boy born and brought up in the Blue-Grass country of Kentucky. Since his earliest childhood days this boy has known numerous kinds of horses, and many individual horses on intimate terms. He appreciates them, makes friends with them, and talks to them. He especially understands and love his own headstrong Quarter Horse, Buck. This story, which he tells in his own words, is about his exciting trip to Vienna, Austria, to meet the world's most famous horses, the Lipizzaner Stallions of the Spanish Riding School. In a tradition begun by the Habsburg Emperors, these horses are specially bred and trained in the Classical art of riding and performing - an art that comes down from the ancient Greeks. They now belong to all the people of the Independent Socialist State of Austria, but they still continue their ancient traditions. Joe visits the fabulous White Stallions in their Castle stables, and at practice sessions in the beautiful arena of the Hofburg Castle. He even gets a chance to talk to some of them. Finally, he tells of the great official performance, when a salute is given to General Patton and the American soldiers who saved the Lipizzaners for Austria. In his own unmatched way, Joe tells these tales of horses and adventures, together with some important and accurate bits of history, and many other delightful experiences, to make an unusually thrilling tale.
