1st edition hardcover in green cloth covered boards with red title box on head of backstrip with silver gilt titles. Tips and spine ends bumped, cloth is not split on any of them. Light handling soil on boards and edge of page block. Hinge papers are fine, tidy gift presentation (non-authorial) on half title page. The 188 page text is tight, bright, crisp and unmarked. Original dust wrapper has a green background with a cream oval showing the three sisters riding ponies one following the other out for a walk in the country. Jacket shows small chips at tips and head of spine, and a 1.5" long abrasion at fore-edge of frt board. That is not a chip near the foot of the front gutter but a reflection of the flash on the removable mylar covering. It began with Picotee, then came Tony, and Pengo and a whole host of other ponies. Some were amenable to discipline, others were decidedly not. But good, or bad, for the three girls who looked after them, the more ponies they had the more they liked it. This is the Pullein-Thompson sisters first collaboration on a pony story, published in 1946, when they were still in their teens.
