A magnificent spa is turned into a hospital just before the Civil War. 38 pages of crisp, unmarked text is at the ready. Just off Interstate 81, in a little valley amid the high mountains of Southwest Virginia, lies the site of Montgomery White Sulphur Springs, a magnificent spa which, with the coming of the Civil War, was converted to a hospital. A multitude of soldiers died there, some from wounds and amputations, others from the ravages of virulent epidemics. After a brief, post-war revival, the beautiful resort was mysteriously destroyed. From early times to years after the demise of the resort, local residents attributed unearthly hands to the strange happenings in that little valley, bounded as it was by Devil's Den Creek and a geological formation known as Lucifer's Armchair. This is the stuff of which: The Night Bath is made. The legends of Montgomery White are brought together in the surrealistic tale of a young soldier who journeys to the spa and there confronts the unkown.
