Christine and Colin Scott, and their cousin, Alison, had been invited to spend the summer holidays with Edna Blythe who kept a small riding school near the sea. They arrived at the stables one foggy day to find that Edna had been taken to the hospital, leaving no one in charge of the horses. When they had recovered from the unpleasant surprise they decided that they were quite capable of looking after the riding school and immediately set to work. The rest of the tale conveys the adventures and mishaps they shared with a happy-go-lucky Irishman, and points out the difficulties, as well as the pleasures which can be derived from looking after horses.
