Now he was returning once again to people, to civilization, to foot and, most exciting of all, to the sight and sound of white men and women. True, he was still siz hundred miles from the nearest railroad and his supplies were nearly out. But he was coming out, coming home. And that night, as he stopped to cook a meagre meal on the shore of a wilderness lake, he was filled with a glorious happiness. Suddenly, in that vast and uninhabited wilderness, a white woman appeared. Philip was stunned. But when he heard her story, he made a promise which started him on one of the strangest adventures which have ever fallen to the lot of a man. Without knowing where he was going, or into what danger, he promised to return with this strange White Woman to her wilderness home as her husband in name only. He promised to fight for her without asking why. And when that fight was won and right had triumphed, he promised to go off into the forest and not to come back. That was the beginning of one of the most exciting adventure stories and one of the tenderest love stories which the author, great writer of the far North has ever penned.
