Possible first edition hardcover in orange paper covered boards showing bumped head of spine, foot of spine and four tips still sharp. Not exlib. 124 pp text is crisp and unmarked. Book opens to half title but I see no evidence of a removed fep. Price-clipped dust jacket shows a little color loss at extrems and spine backstrip. Also shows a kid on a black horse, racing uphill to a castle, next to this person are two unsaddled horses galloping along as well. Anna has a special gift for handling horses - and people. When her mother buys a cottage next to the Castle Stables owned by the famous but irascible horseman, Major Gardiner or the 'King' as he is known locally, both these qualities prove invaluable. The arrival of Anna's cousins Tim and Jane, for a stay in her caravan sparks off a series of intriguing adventures. Anna has a pet pig, but horses usually have a terror of pigs... The children very soon fall foul of the bad-tempered Major, an impossible man since the disappearance of his son a year ago. Suddenly, odd things start to happen - thundering hooves at dead of night, provisions stolen from the caravan, signs of habitation up at the old castle ruins. With Anna as head sleuth, and Pig playing no small part, the clues are followed up with such determination by the three cousins - Jane having overcome her initial reluctance - that a major piece of detection is accomplished, with extremely happy results for all concerned.
