1881 First edition hardcover in royal blue cloth w/bright gilt horse and black blind stamped ornamental border on frt cov, Gilt spine title and ornaments. Tips bumped, lightly rubbed. Black endpps with former owner's bookplate of Audley Farm, Berryville VA on frt pastedn. Water marked endpps, text shows some finger marks in margins, 115 pp plus 43 pps publishers catalog bound in rear. First edition, displays well on the shelf. Full page b/w plates on heavy stock and several line drawings in the text. The author laments in his preface that the race-course has caused the excessive creation of thoroughbreds and why should not the general-utility horse possess a suitable arena whereon to exhibit his speed and endurance at other paces than the gallop? As Englishmen it is our duty to do all in our power to prevent the decline and fall of the British utility horse.
