Lovely 1st edition in green cloth boards w/presentation plate on front end paper, this book was a gift of famous author/sportsman Alexander Mackay-Smith to the National Sporting Library in 1973. No pocket or stamps. Not a circulated copy or traditional exlib. DJ in new mylar is a professional reproduction that shows light wear at extrems, few pieces of clear cello tape at spine ends does not detract. 304 pp. This is a story of the Turf, based on over twenty-five years' practical experience and told with unusual insight, clarity and feeling. The author, who is acknowledged to be the best writer on racing in present-day journalism, worked for ten years in a racing stable at Newmarket, was the most successful amateur rider on the flat in modern racing history, and was one of the best of his day over fences and hurdles. The first seven years of his life were spent in India and the first chapter of the book gives a clear picture of this now dead and distant era. After the death of his father, he came to England with his mother to follow the orthodox career of a boy destined for the Indian cavalry. But from the day he was taken to Sandown Park, when on holiday from his preparatory school, he realized that the Turf and not the Army was his vocation. His unswerving devotion to this aim is the theme of the book, which is however full of the humor of one who does not take himself too seriously. Invalided out of the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, he joined Victor Gilpin's stable and entered upon his brilliant career of race-riding. John Hislop's account of this happy period, which ended with his departure for the war in 1939, is vivid and realistic, communicating his expert knowledge of, and passion for, the Turf, and revealing how he attained an ambition in spite of difficulties and set-backs. This is an autobiography of outstanding interest not only for followers of racing but also for all who appreciate good riding and writing.
