Nice hardcover with black titles on soiled and spotted muted orange cloth. 1932 1st edition, 1st printing. All 4 tips and spine ends bumped but not rubbed. There is one 1/4" closed surface tear about mid spine through the cloth and 1st cardboard layer, else straight and square, page block unaffected. Tasteful former owners bookplate on frt pastedown along with her signature and Christmas 1978 at foot of frt end paper. There is no dust jacket and it is not a former library copy. Measures 11 1/4" tall x 8 3/4" wide x 3/4" thick. The 71 pp heavier weight text is tight and bright, hinge papers are fine. No noted foxing or fingerprints. Sounds worse than it looks. Well illustrated with 16 pages of casually drawn pencil & charcoal vignettes and full page plates to accompany equine prose featuring 23 different horse types & breeds. George Denholm Armour (1864- 1949) is a famed and collectible sporting artist. Born in Waterside, Lanarkshire, Scotland, he graduated the University of St. Andrews and Edinburgh College of Art. On title page, what might make a lively toast: Here's hoof-beats, heartbeats, dear delights; The horse o' days, his health o'nights. Contents include: The Horse / The Hunter / The Chaser / The Show Jumper / Polo Ponies / The Pinto / The Shire Horse / The Clydesdale / The Hackney / Prejavalsky's Horse / The Race Horse / Job's Horse / British Ponies / The Arab / The Farmer's Cob / The Troop Horse / The Stallion / The Suffolk Punch / The Sheltie / The Young Girl's Hunter / The Carrier's Horse / The Gipsy's Nag / The Pensioner.
