London J.M. Dent 1903 Reprint Gilt Lettering Leather Boards Good + No Jacket Book Set
Complete 40 volume uniform set in olive green/gilt limp leather bindings. Illustrated with tissue guarded, engraved frontispiece in each volume, title page, Preface, text, glossary, and notes. Top edge of page block in rich gilt. All volumes have moderate wear, but there are no eyesores here. Leather is dry on darkened spines but gilt titles remain legible. Head of spine rubbed on all vols. Covers of all books are attached however several are starting and one is split half way up spine from lower edge. Watermarks on lower quarters of leather boards on most volumes but pages remain flat and fresh. No names within, each does posess a yellow and black armorial crest/shield (as published) on front & rear pastedowns. Red silk bookmarks sewn in are fragile and frayed if they had not been looped around back into the page block. Still a handsome set that displays well on the shelf. The first appearance of this set was in 1894, and it was published a number of times up to the 1930s. The complete set is usually stated to be 40 volumes. The individual volumes of our set were published between 1903 and 1904. All volumes are bound uniformly and each begins with a brief bibliographic history of this edition (or "issue" as referred to by the publisher). Books are cleaned and dust wrappers placed in new mylar whenever possible. Book images are available, just ask. Rare set of 9 complete vols. Full calf with 5 raised bands, gild embellished compartments, red and dark green title labels. Both boards two tone leather, ruled in gilt w/dentiled edges. AEG. Several boards detached, a few backstrips loose but attached on one side, only one with a half inch chip at head, others rubbed but essentially complete, shelf wear at tips and spine ends, gutters dry & cracked. All page blocks tight. Supreme candidate for repair as they still display well, just need reattaching at hinges. Rare set published by Macmillan between 1863 and 1866. Image is example of condition, spine is the worst one shown with the chip. More pics available.
