Thirteen leaves on heavy stock, Original green pictorial cloth, stamped in green, red, and gilt, Unpag. All edges gilt. Lovely illsutrations. Heay wear, corners rubbed round. FEP with former gift dedication detached and laid in. Internally quite clean. A very good copy. The first separately issued version of James Whitcomb Riley's poem, "An Old Sweetheart of Mine," beautifully lithographed in a watercolor style by Armstrong & Co. in Boston with calligraphic text, illustrated borders and vignettes, and five plates in color. The poem first appeared in OLD FASHIONED ROSES in 1888.and in a later extended version in 1902. Rare copy. Books are cleaned and dust wrappers placedin new mylar whenever possible. Riley, James Whitcomb Poems Here At Home Birthday Dinner Edition Plus Bronze Riley Medal

A birthday dinner in honor of the Poet was held in Indianapolis and attended by four hundred people. Many admirers were turned away and telegrams from countless well-wishers were cabled, including one from President Woodrow Wilson. To mark the event, a special birthday edition of Riley's Poems Here at Home was published and distributed to attendees. This 187 pp book in grey paper covered boards with ecru colored cloth spine and bright gilt blindstamped titles is in as new condition. Includes original onion skin dust wrapper and is in original presentation box with a poem dated 1915 applied onto the cover. Box cover has two split sides and moderate surface wear, but shows well and has kept this exceedingly rare volume in fine form. Also included is the medal struck in celebration of the sixty-sixth anniversary of the birth of James Whitcomb Riley and done in bronze by Lorado Taft (who knew Riley personally) on the commission of one hundred of the poet's admiring fellow townsmen. This is also in its original presentation case and companion booklet with cord tied pages and some ink underlining and marginalia pertaining mostly to the guest list of who's who in the rear. Booklet has glue residue on cover, perhaps from now missing applied item? Five hundred proofs of the medal were struck, of which this is number 142. It is a two sided item inserted into a die-cut cardboard piece that fits into the box. Medal can be removed. The box itself with paste on label is worn, torn and missing two sides off the cover. Also included is the original invitation to the Claypool Hotel in Indianapolis Oct 7, 1915 printed on heavy card stock. It is not addressed to anybody in particular however the label on the book box is imprinted with John B. Cockrum, to whom we guess this set was originally presented.
