Marcus, son of a Roman Tribune, is brought to Britain at the age of seven. He grows up with the Celts, learning their languages and dialects, their customs and superstitions. When Marcus is in his teens he is named a tribune. He is reluctant, but accepts his appointment and is schooled to be a warrioir. In a series of conflicts, Marcus fights Queen Boadiceas's men, and later becomes one of her chieftains. He witnesses great battles and barbaric slaughter on both sides, and sees most of his friends die. In the end he comes to the conclusion that he must decide his own future course and has the courage to face the consequencs of his decision.
