Text tight and bright with mapped endpapers, hinges fine. Displays well with ten lovely b/w full page plates by Lionel Edwards. Black and white photocopy of the dust wrapper front panel, flap and backstrip is laid in, however, this is from the Eyre and Spottiswoode publication, not the Scribners. Does contain the story blurb which is as follows: "The Tamlyn family, on holiday in Devon, notice strangely irregular flashes from the lighthouses at Hartland and Bull Point. Stephen Tamlyn is riding on the sands the next day, when his horse shies at a bottle, which proves to contain a mysterious message. He encounters a stranger, who offers to decipher the message and who subsequently invites the children to a picnic. During luncheon they see an aeroplane drop something shining on the beach, and by now it is apparent that there are sinister goings on in this quiet corner of the coast. The investigation of these happenings lands the Tamlyn family and their ally, Mr. Prosper, in the most exciting holiday, described by Mr. Mais with unflagging gusto and with intimate knowledge of the West country and it's people. Illustrator Lionel Edwards (1878-1966) was one of the most prolific of British sporting artists, and a prolific author as well. He studied under A. Cope and Frank Calderon at the School of Animal Painting in Kensington. Edwards was most at home in straight hunting sketches, and he became a favorite of the hunting fraternity, who even today find pleasure in the more than seventy books he illustrated. We gift wrap every book at no charge and place dust wrappers in new mylar whenever possible. Book images available, just ask.
