Copyright page states George G. Harrap/London and David McKay is imprinted on foot of backstrip with no mention of D. McK. within the book anywhere. Original navy blue cloth with scrolling vine/leaf & title in the style of Rackham's handwriting in dec gilt on frt board., t.e.g., other edges uncut. 232 pp. Tissue guarded color plate frontis. & 11 other fine color plates by Arthur Rackham together with numerous other b/w drawings. Spine ends bumped with two micro 1/8" splits in cloth at head, color loss only at fairly sharp tips. Light, even surface soil (dust) on boards with spine slightly darkened but title more than legible. Taupe on cream silhouette illust endpapers with men riding horses amongst trees and over fields. Sl. foxing to prelims & title page, else clean, tight, crisp and unmarked without any inscriptoins. Remains more than presentable with text and ills in near fine state. London-born Arthur Rackham (1867-1939), leading artist during the golden age of Edwardian gift books, studied drawing at evening classes at Lambeth School of Art (1884) for 7 years whilst working full-time in insurance. He began to illustrate books, using the then new half-tone process his fame spread ing upon publication of his illustrated Grimm's Fairy Tales. In 1905 his illustrated Rip van Winkle introduced him to the US public; one year later Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens was published. Rackham was made a full member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1908, and was honoured abroad, with gold medals from Milan (1906) and Barcelona (1911). Edges of the boards and spine are rubbed. Dust jacket is crimped with several tiny chips along the edges, is price clipped but covered in new mylar and shows very well. 210 pages. There is a small area of white-out covering previous owner name on FEP. The text is clean & the edges of the pages have red guilt. The charm of this novel lies in the fact that it is written with an art which is perfect artlessness. Beautiful color illustrations. The story of a man of a true gentleness and pure feeling.
