Horses And Courses A Pictorial History of Racing, Hedges, David; Foreword By John Hislop
81 Hedges, David; Foreword By John Hislop Horses And Courses A Pictorial History of Racing
NY The Viking Press 1972 0670379530 / 9780670379538 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good + 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall Mayer, Fred
Stunning copy in olive cloth boards with black titles. Hefty volume, oversized postage required. No names or soil, 1/2 in closed taped tear at head of blank fep. Unclipped dj in new mylar shows light wear and color loss at tips, displays beautifully. 220 pgs of b/w and color photos and illustrations. David Hedges, a racing correspondent well known on every racecourse on the five continents tells of the courses and the famous horses and jockeys who have won famous victories on them throughout the world. Here is the charm of Longchamp: the glory of Arkle, the magic of Royal Ascot; the Epson Derby and Lester Piggott; Ireland's The Curragh, the gallops on Pisa's huge sand hills; the Moscow Hippodrome, then the author turns to the USA with its 138 racecourses and 45 million paying customers a year. He describes its famous tracks such as Aqueduct, the fashionable Saratoga Springs, the now world-famous Laurel, MD where the Washington DC International Invitation race for all nations is run and the heart of the American thoroughbred industry, Lexington, KY. The author goes south particularly to Argentina and Brazil but the most picturesesque course is Vina del Mar on the coast of Chile. India, South Africa, Japan and New Zealand are all covered in this book and a long section is devoted to Australia whose inhabitants Mr. Hedges describes as "eating, sleeping, talking racing", and whose Melbourne Cup is one of the world's most famous races. Lastly, Mr. Hedges picks and describes the exploits of his twelve greatest horses, which include Hyperion from Great Britain, Phar Lap from Australia, Ribot from Italy, and Man o'War from the US, and discusses the styles and tactics of famous jockeys, such as the American Arcaro, England's Gordon Richards and Lester Piggott, and Australians such as Scobie Breasley. Here in fact, is a book that will not only intstruct and delight the regular racegoer but is guarenteed to lead countless new faces through racing's turnstiles; and for good measure, Mr. Hedges in a chapter called "An Eye on the Criminal underlines the perils in addition to the pleasures which the newcomer to racing may encounter.

Far From a Gentleman, Hislop, John
87 Hislop, John Far From a Gentleman
London Michael Joseph 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Good + 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Photographs
Lovely copy in green cloth boards w/presentation plate on front end paper, this book was a gift of famous author/sportsman Alexander Mackay-Smith to the National Sporting Library in 1973. No pocket or stamps. Not a circulated copy or traditional exlib. DJ in new mylar is a professional reproduction that shows light wear at extrems, few pieces of clear cello tape at spine ends does not detract. This is a story of the Turf, based on over twenty-five years' practical experience and told with unusual insight, clarity and feeling. The author, who is acknowledged to be the best writer on racing in present-day journalism, worked for ten years in a racing stable at Newmarket, was the most successful amateur rider on the flat in modern racing history, and was one of the best of his day over fences and hurdles. The first seven years of his life were spent in India and the first chapter of the book gives a clear picture of this now dead and distant era. After the death of his father, he came to England with his mother to follow the orthodox career of a boy destined for the Indian cavalry. But from the day he was taken to Sandown Park, when on holiday from his preparatory school, he realised that the Turf and not the Army was his vocation. His unswerving devotion to this aim is the theme of the book, which is however full of the humour of one who does not take himself too seriously. Invalided out of the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, he joined Victor Gilpin's stable and entered upon his brilliant career of race-riding. John Hislop's account of this happy period, which ended with his departure for the war in 1939, is vivid and realistic, communicating his expert knowledge of, and passion for, the Turf, and revealing how he attained an ambition in spite of difficulties and set-backs. This is an autobiography of outstanding interest not only for followers of racing but also for all who appreciate good riding and writing.

Horses For Courses An Irish Racing Year, Holland, Anne
91 Holland, Anne Horses For Courses An Irish Racing Year
Edinburgh Mainstream Publishing 2005 184018910X / 9781840189100 First Edition Hard Cover As New As New 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Photographs
199 pgs. Gorgeous, crisp, sharp, unread copy in like dj in new mylar. This meticulously researched book, for which author Anne Holland visited every Irish racecourse and met many of Ireland's top racing personalities, highlights the individuality of each Irish racing venue. Each has its own special qualities and atmosphere but all share two common traits: a warm welcome and good sport. And that is what the author believes Irish racing is all about. The country courses enjoy a huge level of support from the local population. It may be raining and the races may be 'ordinary' but the stands will always be crowded. That is because racing is part of Irish culture and the nation's way of life: with 27 courses, it has proportionately far more venues than Great Britain. The people and horses featured within "Horses for Courses" are representative of the broad variety of personalities that make up Irish racing past and present. The book also reveals how much has been done to improve racecourse facilities since the mid-'90s and that substantial investment in the sport is ongoing today. There can be no better way of getting to know Ireland than by visiting its racecourses: from the glamour of Leopards town and the class of the Curragh to the majestic mountains around Killarney and the unique challenge of Downpatrick; from the warmth of welcome at Gowran Park and Clonmel to the summer holidaymakers' meetings and 'industry' days in the winter months.
