The Thoroughbred Business Inside the Modern Bloodstock Industry NF 1st ED/HB/DJ, De Moubray, Jocelyn
58 De Moubray, Jocelyn The Thoroughbred Business Inside the Modern Bloodstock Industry NF 1st ED/HB/DJ
London Hamish Hamilton 1987 0241123798 / 9780241123799 First Thus Hardcover Near Fine Near Fine Book 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Photographs & Drawings
Lightly bumped tips of book and unclipped dj. 222 pp text fine. In contrasting the bloodstock business in the United States and in Britain, Ireland and Europe during the boom of the 1970's and 1980's, the author explains who gained most and why, and describes some of the new leaders in the industry, as well as more public figures such as Robert Sangster, Wayne Lukas and Sheikh Mohammad. The author also considers the nature of the horse breeding business, It depends upon the horse's wellbeing and its popular appeal, and yet horses are frequently abused for the sake of short-term commercial gains. Above all, this facinating book shows how the prosperity of the thoroughbred business relies upon the horse's mystery, the impossibility of accurately predicting success on the racetrack and the confusion and uncertainty which still surround the question of why one racehorse runs faster than another.
