Jane and Penny Brooke were thrilled with their father bought them, on a trial bases, a pony called Freckles. The important condition Mr. Brooke insisted upon was that the girls had to prove they knew how to care for it. For all their enthusiasm, Jane and Penny had to learn the hard way, especially since Freckles seemed to have a knack for getting into trouble - what it means to have A Pony In The Family. This is a pony story with a difference. The background skillfully provides valuable information with excellent illustrations, telling exactly how to keep, train and tend to a pony.

Over the years Patchwork was sold or traded many times. At last, after he had walked over most of England, he fell into the kind hands of the gypsy king. The king had a traveling troupe of trained bears, dogs, goats, pigs and ponies. He taught Patchwork many tricks so he could earn his keep and amuse the crowds at the race courses where the gypsies gave most of their shows. On day, at a great race meeting, an American saw the pony and decided that Patchwork was the perfect pony for his son Piper Perkins, and Mr. Perkins can use him in his own circus act, so he bought the shaggy pony from the gypsy king and shipped him across the ocean. His trip across the pond was an adventure in itself, upon landing he was so happy to find himself once more on dry land he bucked and kicked for joy. Mr. Perkins led Patchwork to his car. The pony was so small that he could easily stand in the back part of the automobile. It was fine to ride in this way, a lot faster and not so much work as tramping over the countryside behind a wagon. After a long ride, they came to Three Ring Farm where he met his new stablemates, Oscar the donkey and Crazy Quilt the circus pony, Mick a Scottish Deerhound and Mac a Scottish Terrier barked a welcome. Patchwork's exploits with young Piper Perkins include fox hunting, pulling children on a frozen pond, circus acts, tricks and so much more. This title is one of Paul Brown's most sought books and is loaded with his fabulous b/w line art throughout.
