The only thing they have in common is Midge, a pinto Shetland pony. They give her all the love and attention any pony could ever ask for, and she ends up giving them more than they ever could have imagined -- a horse family of their own! With characteristic charm and simplicity, Marguerite Henry weaves a true-to-life tale about the joys and difficulties of owning and raising horses.

And it was Borina who, as a mature school stallion, helped train young apprentice riders, and thus became known as the Four-Footed Professor. One of his pupils was Hans, a baker's boy. Day after day Hans had watched with longing eyes the parade of the Lipizzaners as they crossed the street from their stables to the Palace Riding Hall. Cinchfoot The Story of a Range Horse, Hinkle, Thomas C.
176 Hinkle, Thomas C. Cinchfoot The Story of a Range Horse
Grosset & Dunlap 1938 Revised Edition Hardcover Very Good Good + Book 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
VG revised edition hardcover in good dj. Edge wear to blue 'tweedy' paper covered boards, 253 pp text tight and bright. Unclipped dj has some chips at spine ends, tips and one hear gutter at head of frt board that took the top of the T out of the word Story, but still displays well in new mylar sleeve. Cinchfoot was only three months old when his mother died and he began to run with a heard of range horses led by a big black gelding with a white face, known as Blaze Face. When Blaze Face was caught and tied in a corral, the cowboys figured the young horse would follow him. And he did....There were many adventures for Cinchfoot and Blaze Face including being broke, escaping the cowboys and falling into the hands of a traveling rodeo and much more. From the Author's Note: "Cinchfoot and Blaze Face, under different names, are based on real characters. The remarkable friendship between them was a reality. Horsemen of the West, including Lloyd Hardin and John Campbell, have more than once told me of the two horses and their unusual friendship for each other. Nor was this the only incident in the West when a gelding befriended a small colt and a friendship sprang up between the two that lasted throughout life. When Cinchfoot was last heard of he was twenty-three years old, living on a ranch in Montana, It was said by those who saw him at the time that he was in excellent health and as beautiful as ever. Old Blaze Face lived to be twenty-six years old before he crossed the Great Divide.

The awkwardly graceful colt is a marked horse from the day he is foaled. His mother, Big Bay, possess that combination of intelligence, stamina and spirit most prized by true horsemen. So Sam McSwain, the Horseshoe's young foreman, pays a top price for her to get the new colt. The trouble begins when the four-year-old is stolen from the Horseshoe. A stranger to cruelty, Mustang fights back - against spurs and quirts. Freed by a young girl, Mustang heads for the open range, shunning the haunts of men. Raised in the stable, Mustang needs all his intelligence to survive that first winter. A Trapper befriends the big bay during the worst blizzard, helping him to half-trust men again. With the arrival of new grass, however, big bay is off. Captured again to be utilized as a race horse, Mustang is frightened by the shrieks of the crowd when he wins his first race. He throws his rider and simply keeps running. A legend now, the big bay is sighted - here - there - miles off - throughout his home range. But neither ropes, fences, nor traps can hold him. He responds only to the kindness he remembers from Sam. How Mustang repays that kindness - and adds another chapter to his fame - is the thrilling climax to Thomas C. Hinkle's tale of the Old West.
