Tomorrow's Champion, Anderson, C. W.
6 Anderson, C. W. Tomorrow's Champion
NY The Macmillan Co. 1946 First Edition Hardcover Very Good + Very Good Book 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Anderson, C. W.
VG 1st edition hardcover in medium brown cloth has wear at tips. Boards shaken. Unclipped professionally reproduced color illustrated dj has chips missing from head & foot of spine, lower tip has a 1 1/2" open tear, lower edge has two 1/2" closed tears and there is color fading along spine, upper & front edges. Unpaginated with crisp text and stunning lithographs. No tears, writing or soil. No matter how brilliant the performance of a fine horse may be, that is only part of the story. What bloodlines produced the speed and stamina, and what was the training that brought out the honesty and consistency, may well prove the most fascinating part of the story. Here C. W. Anderson tells that story from the beginning - a young colt stands a little shaky and uncertain and grows to be the thoroughbred champion on the track.

Over The Sticks. The Sport of National Hunt Racing, Ayres, Michael; and Gary Newbon. Foreword by Lord Wigg
8 Ayres, Michael; and Gary Newbon. Foreword by Lord Wigg Over The Sticks. The Sport of National Hunt Racing
England Great Albion Books 1971 0715353918 / 9780715353912 1st Edition Hardcover Fine Near Fine Book 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
Near fine/near fine dj. 216 pp text as new save for light curl to top of front dj panel. DJ not price clipped. Green hardcover boards straight and sharp. Includes a directory of National Hunt Organizations, a list of winners of major races, a chart of official scale of weight-for-age in rear. An exhaustive work on the sport of steeplechasing. After tracing the stormy history of steeplechasing from the first race over jumps - a three-horse event in Leicestershire in 1792 - to its gradual development into the spectacular attraction that it is today, the book takes the reader behind the scenes at the racecourse, explaining the duties of officials such as stewards, clerks of the course, handicappers, starters and others, and showing how the sport is controlled and administered. It describes how courses are laid out, how fences are built and explains the differences between the various types of races, as well as dealing the comparative merits of betting with bookmakers or on the Tote. Methods of training are examined, with an insight into the daily life of a busy trainer, and there is much about that 'hardy breed', the jump jockeys, the strenuous life they lead and the risks they take for comparatively meager rewards. For the world-be owner, there is advice on how to set about it, either alone or as a member of a syndicate, details on what it costs to keep a jumper in the manner to which it will have become accustomed - roughly equivalent to the charges of a two-star hotel!, and a frank assessment of the rewards and tribulations to be expected of ownership.

Isaac Murphy Kentucky's Record Jockey SIGNED with Additional Material Laid In, Borries, Betty Earle
14 Borries, Betty Earle Isaac Murphy Kentucky's Record Jockey SIGNED with Additional Material Laid In
KY Kentucke Imprints 1988 0935680365 / 9780935680362 1st Edition Soft cover Very Good + No Jacket Book 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Photographs Author's Presentation Copy
Collectible first edition. The history of an astounding athlete record setter and breaker. 133 pp in VG condition with light surface soil and negligible wear to tips from storage, glossy pictorial cover uncreased, no names, tears or soil within, only two now-unfolded dog ears. Presentation copy from author to Stu Hyatt, signed on half title page along with two notes from Betty Borries, one apologizing for the typos in her book and another stating that the four photocopied various newsprint and magazine articles additionally present were sent from the author to Stuart Hyatt. Many consider Isaac Murphy the greatest American jockey of all time. The son of a former slave, Murphy rose to prominence in a field that was dominated by African American jockeys at the time. By his own account Murphy won 44% of his races. Only 34.5% can be verified in chart books from the era, but it's likely that some of Murphy's races were not covered in the chart books. Either way, Murphy set a standard that no other jockey has met. Isaac Murphy won with more than a third of his mounts year after year. Murphy won a record 44 percent of the races he entered in his career. He won the Kentucky Derby three times, the Latonia Derby five times, and four of the first five runnings of the American Derby, once the richest 3-year-old race in America. Not only was Murphy known for his skill on horseback but also for his honesty and loyalty. He once refused to let champion Falsetto lose the 1879 Kenner Stakes, even though gamblers enticed him with bribes. Among others, Murphy rode Emperor of Norfolk, Kingston, Firenze, and Salvator. Aboard Salvator in the 1890 Suburban he defeated Snapper Garrison and Tenney in a historic match. Isaac Murphy also owned and trained horses during his career. He died of pneumonia at age 36 in 1896.
